Earthen InstantPeel Review

Today I am reviewing the Earthen InstantPeel. I was sent a box of these last month complimentary in exchange for my honest opinion of the product. I have heard of Earthen Skin Care, specifically this product (through Birchbox) but have never tried any of their products before. The website doesn't have much information about the brand itself or any ingredients lists. I checked CosDNA to see if there were any entries, but there was not so I made one: CosDNA Analysis of Earthen InstantPeel

Earthen InstantPeel Ingredients:

Purified Water, Calcium Carbonate, Shrimp extract, Diazolidinyl Urea, Citric Acid, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Hydrolyzed Collagen, Mentha Piperita Leaf extract, Lodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Propylene Glycol,  Dimethyl Mea, Fish Oil, Panthenol.

The Earthen Instant Peel (1.05 oz) comes in a Cardboard box containing six single-use packets. Their website touts this product as a gentle alternative to expensive and aggressive salon facials. Directions instruct you to take one packet in to the shower with you and let face stream for 5 minutes before applying the peel in sections, taking about 7 minutes to gently massage into entire face. I have used a few in-shower facial peels similar to this one before but none of them peeled away quite as much at once as this one did, but my skin was left dry and flaky in patches immediately afterwards as well as for the following week. I used this a second time about three weeks later with the same results. Since then I have been using these on my feet and knees with much better results. You can pick some up here if you'd like to give it a try: https://earthenskincare.com/collections/frontpage/products/instant-peel-exfoliant

The CosDNA analysis was not kind; almost half of the ingredients are flagged as unsafe. Most of those ingredients are preservatives. I can guess there are all those preservatives to prevent the shrimp extract and fish oil from rotting in the sealed package (blech).

How my Rating Works
  • Effectiveness is 2/3 of the Total Rating
  • Packaging is 1/6 of the Total Rating
  • Physical Qualities is 1/6 of the Total Rating
Earthen InstantPeel Individual Ratings (0 - 5)

  • Effectiveness = 2
    • This facial peel sloughs off dead skin however it is extremely drying to face; took over a week for my dry patches to recover. Worked well on other areas of my body.
  • Packaging = 2
    • The outer packaging is attractive. Directions are simple to follow. Product is intended to be used in the shower; the box should be be made of a recyclable plastic, not cardboard that can become damp. Inner packaging is very difficult to open in shower as hands and packaging are steamy. Had to use my teeth to rip open, gross because it smells bad.
  • Physical Qualities = 2
    • Clear, very slippery gel like fluid that is difficult to control. Aroma is strong and unpleasant; like rotting fish. Have to massage for a few minutes for peeling to begin.

Earthen InstantPeel Total Rating = 2

As with all products, your mileage may vary (YMMV). My experience with this product was not good; it left my face rough and dry for over a week both times I used it with no radiance. I have had much better experience with similar peels that cost less, are vegan, and cruelty free.
